5 Ways You Can Travel And Still Be Healthy

YOUR ON-THE-GO GUIDE

3 min read

Nothing can beat a great vacation or successful business trip—except once you return home feeling bloated from overeating. Life on the road is inherently unhealthy. Choosing healthy foods on-the-go doesn’t need to be impossible, though.

With only a little preparation, you can plan for delicious, nutrient-rich options that help you stay on track with your fitness goals. Our experts share 5 methods to stick to your diet plan while traveling, so that you can enjoy any trip without worrying about packing on extra pounds.

1. Eat small

Eating small servings of healthy food during the day sends a signal to your brain that the food supply is plentiful, so it’s OK to burn through those calories quickly. Limiting your calorie load at just one sitting also offers you lots of energy.

Eating a lot of calories in a single meal—even if they’re healthy calories—sends your brain the message that leaner times must certainly be around the corner, so those calories will get stored as fat. Eating an excessive amount of calories in one sitting may also allow you to feel sluggish and sleepy.

2. Pack your snack

Often when we’re traveling, we don’t have access to food regularly and consistently. The issue is your body responds like it’s facing a food shortage and your metabolism slows way down to stop you from starving.

To help keep the mind and body humming, pack healthy snacks in your car or backpack. Examples are almonds, raw vegetables, yogurt and berries, fresh and dried fruit, and hard-boiled eggs.

3. Expand your choices

If you’re on the way and stop at a fast-food joint, your meal choices are going to be limited by fast food. But if you stop at a food store that offers whole or healthy foods—fruits, carrots, nuts —or a supermarket which includes a salad stall, you quickly expand your choices (and reduce junk-food temptations).

4. Treat yourself right

Think about if you would really order everything if you had to pay for it all. The solution is normally no. This will allow you to pick and choose what you really would like, and then actually enjoy your selection.
However, don’t hesitate to treat yourself when it makes sense. Allow yourself one treat that tickles your fancy. This is an awesome approach, because that treat then becomes the highlight of your trip. As opposed to returning back from your trip feeling bloated, guilty, and heavier by a few pounds, you can return feeling great and with the memory of this one special treat that you enjoyed thoroughly, guilt-free.

5. Water is food

Your body needs water for nearly all of its functions. Drinking a lot of water will flush the human body of toxins, keep your skin fresh, and assist you to eat less. It will also assist you to avoid travel lag, apparent symptoms of overexposure to the warmth or sun, and junk-food cravings.

Believe it or not, lots of the unhealthy cravings we experience on the way can be satisfied with a refreshing glass of pure water.
